How to Inspect a Used Luxury Car Before You Pay in Lagos

Buying a luxury car is a big decision, and a good inspection protects your money. Whether you are looking at a Mercedes-Benz, a Range Rover or a Lexus, this checklist works for any car you plan to buy in Lagos.

1. Start with the papers

Ask to see the customs documents before you fall in love with the car. Check that the chassis number on the documents matches the number on the car, and that the year, make and model on the papers match what you were told.

2. Walk around the body

Look at the car in daylight. Check that the paint colour is even from panel to panel, that the gaps between panels are consistent, and that there are no waves or ripples that could point to old repairs.

3. Check the tyres and wheels

Uneven tyre wear can point to alignment or suspension problems. Check the wheels for cracks and kerb damage.

4. Look inside

Press every button. Test the air conditioning, windows, seat controls, screen, cameras and sensors. Smell the cabin: a damp or musty smell can be a warning sign.

5. Take a proper test drive

Drive on different kinds of road if you can. Listen for knocks, feel for pulling to one side, and check that the gearbox changes smoothly and the brakes feel firm.

6. Bring your own mechanic

A trusted mechanic will see things you will not. A seller who is confident in the car should welcome this.
