Foreign Used vs Nigerian Used Cars: What Is the Difference?

When you shop for a car in Lagos you will hear two phrases again and again: foreign used and Nigerian used. Here is what they mean and what to ask about, whichever you choose.

What is a foreign used car?

A foreign used car was first owned and driven abroad, then imported into Nigeria. It is also called a tokunbo car.

What is a Nigerian used car?

A Nigerian used car has already been driven in Nigeria and may have had one or more owners here.

Neither one is automatically better

What matters most is the condition of the individual car, its papers and its history. A well-kept car with complete documents is a better buy than a neglected one, whatever its origin.

Questions to ask about any used car

  • Are the customs documents complete, and can I see them?
  • How many owners has the car had?
  • Has it been in an accident or had major repairs?
  • Is there a service history?
  • Can I test drive it and have my own mechanic inspect it?
